Closing Report
I am very lucky to have the experience I received at Global Press Institute. I learned how to translate basic data into important reports. I learned to think about the world through a reporter's lens, I am excited to take my new skills into my future career. |
Log #1 Today was my first day interning for Global Press Institute, an NGO that uses journalism as a tool to train and employ women in developing media markets. I was almost an hour late despite leaving home two hours early. The shuttle that was supposed to take me to the office never showed up, so I had to hail a cab across the city. While it was expensive, it did make me feel like an accomplished city girl. Luckily, my boss was very understanding and she knew the shuttle was unreliable. GPI is moving offices and the leases did not match up, so four of us were in a 10 feet by 10 feet room in an “office hotel”. Cristi, my boss, introduced me to the work I will be doing. As a press freedom intern, I will mostly be creating reports on countries that are candidates for GPI’s expansion. She showed me an example report, and it is so detailed! I am definitely intimidated by the high quality of work, I do not know if I have the skills to finish a report to that standard. The first country I will be reporting on is Haiti. The first section of the report details the government structure, so after reading almost every article on the organization of the Haitian government I can now say I am an expert. There are about five main sections that I have to cover in the report, and only finished the government section today. I am worried, because Cristi said that the reports should take me about a two weeks to get done once I get the hang of it. She did say that I can take as long as I need to on this report though, which is good news because it is definitely going to take me a long time. My brain is so exhausted after reading and regurgitating information. So far I really dig my internship, but I am glad I only have it one day a week, it is very draining.

Log #2My commute was much easier this time! I got to the office twenty minutes early so I stopped at Whole Foods and got a coffee. A random thirtyish year old man did ask me out though which was kind of gross. I only finished two more sections, but Cristi is not rushing me or anything. The whole office is actually super supportive. I am working with three other women and they are all hilarious and smart. They keep me on my toes and encourage questions. The internship so far is great, I am learning so many problem solving skills.

Log #3I am so close to finishing this report. Haiti is such a fascinating country, I am really thankful for this opportunity to learn more about it. There is so much corruption and crime in Haiti right now so GPI cannot expand there right now, which is unfortunate but understandable. I feel so proud of myself because I presented the information on which Cristi based that decision. Next week is a board meeting, and I will be helping out, so I am kind of nervous, but I am excited. There are going to be multi-millionaires there.
